The M’z Labo R8 Coil On Plug Conversion Kit is designed for Mazda MX-5 Mk1 (NA) Mk2 (NB) 1.8 Excl VVT applications, replacing the factory coil pack and HT lead arrangement with a direct-fire coil-on-plug setup using Audi R8-style pencil coils. By putting the coil directly on the plug, the system reduces secondary-side losses and helps deliver a stronger, more consistent spark, which is particularly useful on turbocharged, supercharged and other higher-demand builds where the standard ignition setup can begin to struggle.

R8 coils are a popular choice on MX-5 coil-on-plug conversions because they offer a strong balance of OE reliability, compact packaging and ignition performance. On MX-5 standalone ECU setups, tuners commonly step up to the more powerful VAG/Audi units when higher spark energy is needed, particularly as cylinder pressures and rpm increase. That makes them well suited to fast road, track and forced-induction applications where ignition stability matters just as much as peak output.

This kit is configured for wasted spark operation, which keeps the installation straightforward and genuinely plug-and-play without the extra wiring and ECU complexity that comes with a full sequential ignition setup. It includes a fully plug-and-play harness and new ignition coils, allowing installation without cutting or splicing the factory loom. The harness is made using automotive-grade thin-wall PVC wiring and is covered in a black high-temperature-resistant PET braided sleeve, with heat shrink applied at the terminals and joints for added protection and a cleaner finish in the rocker cover area. An additional 6mm eyelet is also included to provide a dedicated ground point at the cam cover.

An optional billet aluminium CNC machined mounting plate is available to complete the installation. As well as adding a cleaner finished look to the conversion, it helps keep the coils correctly located, reducing the chance of them rotating or vibrating excessively on the plugs during use. Please note the wiring harness is for illustration purposes only. The correct harness will be supplied.
